The European Utility Week is a platform for achieving a fully integrated and interconnected electricity system and market in Europe. It hosts the environment for all key players in the smart energy ecosystem to come together and discuss European strategy to achieve a smooth transition towards a low carbon energy supply. The 3-day programme explores four key areas in European energy: Digitalisation, Decarbonisation, Energy Markets and Innovation. Also for this year's edition, WiseGRID was well represented in the program.

The EU Projects Zone at European Utility Week aimed at showcasing the research and findings of several EU funded projects focusing at digitally supporting the energy transition. Visitors heard and discovered first-hand the current results, thus gaining industry knowledge and innovation of EU-funded research. WiseGRID was part of this networking village for exchanging information, experience, knowledge and best practices both with visitors and other Horizon 2020 funded projects.
Scaling decentralisation through local consumption and production
Power to the people has taken on an alternative meaning. The desire to implement a decentralised power system is being accomplished and these systems facilitate bottom-up innovation. The transition to Energy Democracy is irrevocable, promoting constant innovation and enabling local ownership. Goodbye gatekeepers - Hello internet of energy. There is no longer a world that has clearly defined roles from source to end user. Instead, power will be decentralised, and power will be given to the people.
Vaiva Indilaite from REScoop.eu showcased in this session the example of Ecopower to explain how WiseGrid_EU wants to transform the grid while ensuring equal rights for all players in the market, including citizens.
The Energy Transition: A Unique Chance for (Energy) Democracy
One remaining challenge of the low carbon economy is how to get the customer on the train and the thirst for cleaner solutions seems to be greater at the local level. Customer empowerments vs centralised Grid: what's next?
Dirk Vansintjan of REScoop.eu presented the 'buurzame stroom' project, part of our pilot site in Ghent and a great example of how a renewable energy cooperative supports a community in the Energy Transition.
